How can we improve protection efforts for the coming year?

Every season, boats travel between our lakes and rivers. Boaters use the stations installed at the launching ramps to wash their boats. At the end of the summer, it is a good idea to plan improvements for the following year to maintain and reinforce the protection measures already in place. This article offers some ideas for optimizing existing infrastructures.
1. CHECK IF YOUR STATION IS UP TO DATE
An effective station must meet the latest recommendations and use the latest technologies. Several elements need to be evaluated:
- Washing internal piping: ballasts, pumps, and internal tanks often retain contaminated water. Check whether your station can decontaminate them effectively.
- Hot water: make sure your system reaches 60°C, the temperature known to eliminate AIS.
- Washing certificate: a printed or digital receipt validates washing compliance and can serve as proof of access. The system must be reliable and easy to use.
Note: The MELCCFP subsidy program covers both new installations and the upgrade of existing stations. This is an opportunity to finance the upgrade of your equipment.
2. EVALUATE THE USE OF YOUR STATION
It is useful to analyze whether the station has been used to its full potential and whether users are using it correctly. If there are issues, several solutions are possible:
- Presence of a trained employee during peak periods (opening of the fishing season, Canada Day, etc.).
- Improved signage to guide users to the station.
- Educational posters to raise awareness amongst boaters.
- Google My Business profile to increase online visibility.
- Require proof of washing before launching to encourage proper use.
Ozero can add a washing certificate printing module to existing stations, including those from other manufacturers.
3. INCREASE VISIBILITY AND AWARENESS
Awareness is essential to encourage good behavior. Several actions can be implemented:
- Workshops or community days with lake associations.
- Collaboration with your OBV and Ozero Solutions during our regional tours.
- Distribution of educational materials (posters, flyers, info sheets) available free of charge at especes-envahissantes.ca.
4. CREATE A SHARED CULTURE OF PROTECTION
Local initiatives have more impact when they are supported by the community. By involving residents, associations, and frequent users, washing becomes a collective reflex and a shared source of pride.
IN SUMMARY :
To strengthen your protection efforts next year:
- Update your station.
- Modernize your equipment.
- Strengthen education and visibility.
- Involve your community.
